How do we know Lord Gwyn?
when we encounter Shira she asks us if we can recall the name of our god, we are given the dialogue option of Gwyn, but we have never met nor heard of the first lords true name in this game?.

Because we played dark souls 1.

Also, pretty sure everyone knows who Gwyn is within the lore. The God who stole the flame. The God who ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up and Cursed the world. The God who's side hoe created the chaos flame a demons.

And the question is meta as in, you decide if you want your character to know or not. The joy of yes or no answers
It's a reference to the first game. You do meet and kill Gwyn in the first game.

Ds3 is filled to the brim with nostalgia to the first game with a handful of references to the second and Demon's Souls. That's partly why I recommend playing Ds1 before playing 3, so that references such as that one are more easily understood.

You are not your character in the game. You have not been magically spirited away from Earth to the world of Dark Souls, only to awaken in a sarcophagus kitted out (or not) with your starting class gear. You're taking on the role of someone who lived and died as a "chosen undead" in that world, and was thus born into a society we're only getting little peeks at.

Considering the creation "myth" of that world, as told by Dark Souls' opening, is a more-or-less factual account of that world's history, a denizen of that world would have to be woefully isolated or ignorant to not have heard the name Gwyn even in passing.

Yorshka mentions Gwyn several times in her dialogues actually. If the game progression is followed, you'd have already met her by the time you get to the DLC.

He is creator of the Dark Souls world as we know it. Ofcourse his name is well now around the realms.

Well, it's always "the end of times" in Dark Souls, it seems. Anyway, it does seem to be so long after Dark Souls that people have forgotten their own history. i.e. The Way of White's fall into worshippers of the Deep, and Eygon's flippant dismissiveness about Firelink Shrine shows he's either completely ignorant about the Linking of the Fire or just an incredibly large teenage nihilist.

It's the end of the end of times. The end of times was three exits ago and now we about to drive off the cliff.

He's plastered absolutely everywhere and still has mass followings. He is literally God. Why would you NOT know who he is?
MOSLEY Jun 18, 2017 @ 5:17pm
You're a champion of ash. You already attempted to link the fire a long time ago. Of course you know who Gwyn is.

So if we still get "Gwyn" option if we don't ever hear his name in the game from any NPC (avoid Yorshka, for example), it's 100% confirmed with no possible objection, that it's some kind of 4th wall breaking, a nod to the player, since the only way you would get this option is because you are the guy who controls DS3 protagonist and you beat DS1 before. Explanation that you get it because you are Champion of Ash is lame, because only very few people are aware of the past, of DS1 events. Just because you attempted to link the flame before doesn't mean you have to know who Gwyn is to do that. And no - he doesn't have mass followings and his name is mentioned only a couple of times throughout the game by very specific and optional characters. The fact that Shira asks us specifically for his name and his name is mentioned almost nowhere already speaks volumes. Only thing to do now is to check whether this option is available if your character ever hears his name (also just his name isn't enough, she asks what's the name of the God, that's something specific and now known by randoms, also if it would have been common knowledge, she wouldnt's check by asking). I rest my case here

I got curious as to why no one is talking about very deliberate "Gwyn" option in DS3 Ringed City, googled and that's how I got here. I'm surprised that dialogue is not discussed as much as it should have been
