Cheating for tons of embers! Is it a thing?

Friend of mine recently picked up DS3, so I'm pitching myself back into the game. It seems like characters are stored locally, not on the servers (or so my character being lost after a hard drive change suggests), so I see no reason why it shouldn't be possible to edit myself a zillion embers so we can co-op without worrying about state. Is that a thing? Can anyone point me to how I might do that?

A simple approach:
0: Back-up your savefile somewhere safe.
1: Get summoned to a friend.
2: Drop all your embers, let your friend pick them up.
3: Disconnect.
4: Overwrite your savefile with your backup.
5: Repeat from step 1 until your friend has a ridiculous amount of embers.
6: Have them give you back half.
7: Enjoy your jolly cooperation!

Not sure how/if the game is screeneing for this exploit, but it could be worth a shot. It should also (if it works) let you duplicate other items, like soul currency items and boss weapons.

Worth noting, btw: the Guidance miracle lets you see summon signs without using an ember, so that lets you co-op legit without worrying about your ember supply. (And obviously without worrying about repercussions).

The game doesn't take any action on doing this, it's completely safe. I have a friend who does this with Souls of Champions and whatnot for quickly leveling new characters. As long as you're not directly editing your save files with Cheat Engine or whatever else, you're good.

Also, Seek Guidance is not an alternative to embers, as it does not let you summon signs. You can see them, yes, but not summon them. I think it's just there for you to see if it's worth embering, but otherwise it's useless.

Ember system is fine; try farming humanities on DS1.

Ignore those guys arguing.

You can do the "save scum" tactic shown by Yal but you can also download Cheat Engine and download "Reverse Souls" which is a program for cheating in DS3.

I don't exactly remember where it is but go to "Item Swap", drop anything that means nothing to you (throwing knives, dung pie, rubbish, etc.) ONLY ONE AT A TIME REMEMBER, find the item ID for embers and just change the value of the item on the ground to the ember value.

And there you have it! You will not be banned as it is not messing with game files since you can get infinite embers legit by doing invasions.

I recommend to just hack your embers in and uninstall it just to be safe

The whole point of invasions is to reduce ember count so that you can't summon anymore.
Stop cheating.
