Oh well, offline mode is a thing. I never much cared for summoning companions. Occasionally lay down my summon stone to help others though.
And that'll help you git gud. At least against bosses. Or it'll cripple you into relying on a second player to kite the boss like it kinda did me for a bit.
Immersion breaking? Please. There are numerous NPC's who reference summoning phantoms and invading other players. DS1 Solaire straight up says 'yeah the timelines are crossed so you get some helpful some harmful ghosts you know things happen.' Khathee in ds1 is like 'here have a red eye go invade and steal humanity.'
Myazaki, the head dev, did not and never will desire for invasions to be optional. He, from bloodborne onward put invaders there to be a counterbalance to phantoms making the game too easy.
PvP should've been optional, there's no debate on that. You don't need to FORCE pvp on players just to make it harder. I've killed countless invaders, the whole thing is BORING. YOU PEOPLE ARE BORING TO FIGHT. WE DONT WANT TO DEAL WITH YOU ANYMORE, GO SOAK YOUR HEADS.
CO-OP makes the base game easier, so why not add something unpredictable into the mix?
It's a trade off. You could either take the increased health and summons but go against invaders.
Or keep your base health and go against the PVE.
Also, it isn't exactly immersion breaking, in fact it's interwoven into the lore.
I quite enjoyed my time with DS 2 pvp (as long as it was not hacker..), and DS 1 was passable, but 3 ... 3 and I aren't getting along PvP wise. It's always the same boring ♥♥♥♥ with rolls and estus for years instead of days until they can land their 1 combo with the great sword / ugs or just unlock run around like sonic the hedgehog to hit you every now and then with a katana or straight sword. Haven't seen a spell using invader (apart form weapon buffs) in weeks .. so ..yeah .. I kinda agree :)
