Untended Graves
Can someone explain what is the deal with untended graves and cemetery ash/firelink shrine? Are they in different world or different timelines? Or is it like bloodborne?

I don't know all of the lore yet, but from what I assume the untended graves is how the world without fire would be? It's like a small portal to a different reality.

So the illusory wall in consumed King's garden from where we access untended graves is a portal?

I think they're just different points in time. If you go to the Untended Grave Firelink Shrine and speak to the Handmaiden there, before ever speaking to her in the normal Firelink Shrine, when you talk to her afterward in Firelink, she'll recognize you for a moment

Untended Graves is in the past, this can be concluded by 2 points.
1. Champion Gundyr hasn't been corrupted nor impaled like his future self Ludex Gundyr
2. If you don't talk to the shrine handmaiden at all in firelink shrine and head to untended graves and talk to her there she will have special dialogue once you first talk to her in firelink shrine. Basically she wants to introduce herself but instead stops herself as she recognizes you.

So everything else we visit in the game is in past? As they are in continuation with untended graves.

Yeah.
I always thought there was something not right about waking up and then teleport in an unlit bonfire. Untended Graves confirms that you wake up in the future and then you warp back in the past, where the "previous" champion of ash awaits you.

What's the point going in the past?

I don't believe so, as you can see the high wall of lothric from cemetary of ash, and we know that the cemetary is in the present, so i think it is just the untended graves. It also makes no geographical sense for the cemetary to be behind the wall, as you can see the front of the wall from the cemetary, therefore untended graves is just some strange time warp portal.

If you die at the black knights on untended graves, you can pick up your soul at firelink shrine...

I think you guys are looking into it too much. I see it simply as you going back in time to ensure your own arrival to the world. Self preservation. The lady even says something like "don't stay for long etc etc" It kind of references the concept of don't stay and erase your own existence.

Assuming player clears every boss I would say he by chance travels back in time and ensures his own arrival into the world. You are your own father concept.

It's the past. In the world of Dark Souls time itself flows different, it's not linear and sometimes timelines are crossing, as Solaire noticed in DS1.
Bonus to the Handmaiden and Gundyr that is not yet corrupted, is that you can find corpse of the Firekeeper, that has eyes that belonged to the First Firekeeper. You can talk to Ludleth after you take them and he will tell you about these eyes and what happend in the "untended graves".

The Firekeeper that posessed these eyes, seen things she wasn't supposed to see - the dark. And so she chose to extinguish the flame. Also Gundyr never actually was "late" - it's just that Firekeeper betrayed the Age of Fire while there was no Champion of Ash, so can you in the ending called "Betrayal". And that's why there are Black Knights in the Dark Firelink - they came to slay the traitor, it's also they who put Gundyr to be an eternal guard of Firelink, so that only worthy can come through. Also, on your own grave you can find the Ashen Estus ring, that was brought there by Queen of Lothric, but the Queen have died long before us getting out of the grave. Also the NPC invasion will happen even if you already killed the Kriemhild in your world, so it means that she invaded us before we met her in Lothric Castle.

so yea, it's definetly the past ;)
