Before the internet, we used to call people tryhards. They were the ones who showed up at the skatepark with a brand new board, new pads and helmet, a killer mullet, but when it came to actual skating, they couldn't even do a basic rail grind. It's the guy who buys a brand new Les Paul but can't strum a single chord. It's the ping pong player that wears a headband. It's the "biker" who only rides his Harley on the weekend and a drives a minivan the rest of the time. It's people that are trying to be something that they're not. I guess I carried that meaning over to gaming. Oh well.
Now, if you'll excuse me, Matlock is on.
Hmm... I guess you'd count parry/backstab fishers since they're trying real hard to get that critical hit. People with dark infused or darkmoon blade buffed Splitleaf and they only use the true combo. Players who stack body buffs for duels even though they're near useless.
Also I always associated "Try Hards" as people trying far too much to win, even when there's not really a need. Like people who go full havels, +10 estus and dark hand/dragonslayer's axe at Undead Settlement, and that's just against solo hosts.
Add Millwood Greatbow to the list. Since tryhard weapons are used by serious players who do their best to win. My build is a fully min-maxed hypermode sniper that just runs around one-shotting people or blasting them off ledges. Funny, I always thought I could be considered a troll but never a tryhard, because I'm really not trying hard. Learn something new everyday.
