You can 100% i have done it a lot of times. The best weapon to test it are clubs and hammers they stagger him easily. You need to be quick tho.

Neat, I always thought it was like the Soul of Cinder. As in where you can stagger it, but not riposte it.

Not sure why, maybe I was just not fast enough to get the riposte.
