Another way is to hit his tail, it will stagger him. For that use fast weapon but again keep in mind that the boss can do melee attacks too.
In the first phase you can sit on the tail and attack, the arrows in that phase cant get you there. Also might help to have a fire buff (according to fextra lightning is another weakness)
As a last resort you could homeward bone out if you see the attack in time
Thanks for the advice, yeah, I usually run in a circle for the arrow storm in the first phase (for whatever reason it doesn't seem to work for me in the second), have gotten used to avoiding most of it, but I still hate it, especially when it's followed by that magic blast to the face right when my stamina is out from running.
Out of frustration I just went in with mindless agression and downing estus like no tomorrow, and just beat him. I died just as I got the killing blow in, was kind of funny "You Died" followed by the soul item and cinders from defeating him. Not the cleanest win but I'll take it.
Anyone know if there is a way not to bait that attack, or is it not dependent on character actions at all?
I'll try this next encounter, thanks. I think it may have worked this time because I was rushing him more out of frustration.
I started using the blue bug pellets this time, defintely helped. Are the arrows magic damage too, or are they physical? I din't want to test it out :P
As Rizer said. The best way to limit the arrow rain attacks is to rush him when he is teleporting to the other end of the arena.
Here is a better explanation at the end of this video:

Edit; It takes timing and stamina management to get it down consistently.
Excellent.
It is not based on character action at all as far as I know. You can also use twisting light spell to deflect it by spamming it probably. The boss can be hit in the tail as he goes back into the ground so you get more free hits during the black vanishing aoe. As said weak to lightning and fire.
Bug Pellets are seriously your friend. Any particular attack a boss has that hurts a ton if it is some elemental variety use the Bug Pellet and if you have the right Stoneplate Ring to stack that elemental resistance further you can heavily reduce damage. This tactic lets even my naked SL26 character survive blows in NG+5, etc. pretty well when helping others or playing my own save (I do wear a thrall hat if that counts ;o).
Oh, you posted this during my reply. :P They are magical. The wiki shows what most attacks are, too, if ever curious. Even melee attacks might have elements + physical split dmg from some bosses.
hug him in the first phase and try to stay near the human body (duh). just go behind him for this version of his arrow shower for some ez hits or recuperation time. his homing purple magic is not as instant as his second phase so be wary of the timing of the projectiles
second phase is all just roll timing. as for the arrow rain as soon as he starts to cast it make as much distance as you can then run in circles away from the arrows until -if- they catch up to you, then just spam roll and hope for the best. other than that same general principle applies. the purple magic in this phase will all attack you at once as soon as he reappears.
also as soon as he starts channeling his scythe uywards in both phases (i think i don't actually remember what he uses lmao) make some distance so you're not caught by the aoe attack
also consider not doing a sl30 aldrich because that's insane
because none of this answers your question directly the direct answer is no
sry and gl (if any of this is retarded gibberish feel free to ask someone else for help/clarification because i'm hungry)
Usually he lauches this large Farron-Arrow like spell at you that will obliterate your health from distance. Try moving in close, and remember to split when he goes for the Arrow attack. Whenever he launches the little homing spells, you can hide behind the stumps of the broken pillars which block 95% of them. Just watch out for the Large Farron-arrow, it pierces walls.
