What strength weapon should I be using?

Dragon slayer great axe has some extreme damage and its easy to use for new players

Since you only have 3 hours on dark souls 3...

Str weapons you get early on

Greataxe ( axe wielding hollows from the highwall ) Farm it

Broadsword - Find it in a room the hollow was guarding next to the lone lothric spear knight below the 2nd pus of man ( black slime dragon ).

Club - you get it if you chose deprived

Mace - buy from shrine handmaiden or greirat idk

Well he's only at the undead settlement, so i would go for Vordts hammer, which you get from his boss soul, the greataxe, which drops from the hollows with the giant axes, the large club which is in undead settlement, and maybe the great machete that drops from the guys with pots on their backs.

Unless he could heavy infuse it, the claymore would be better for a quality build I'm pretty sure. And it only has D scaling in strength all the way up to +10 without any infusions.

Yeah but he should be right by the Greatwood. And he wouldn't have to waste any titanite on Vordts, because it doesn't take the regular upgrade materials, so he could upgrade Vordts and a regular weapon without having to waste a bunch of titanite shards, and see which he likes better.

I don't think he's going to be getting that any time soon. He's at the undead settlement. But yeah that is a great weapon.

Claymor is pretty good early game and if you have a friend with a lightning gem then have them infuse it for ya otherwise vordts hammer

I know the Dragonslayer greataxe, ringed knight paired Greatswords, ledos hammer, I don't think they read he was in undead settlement.

I know having a friend infuse claymore with a lightning gem kinda remioves str scaling but its still a beast early on itll take you to champion gundyr
