So, what do you guys do to deal with Fire Surge in PvP

It is, there is practically no way to counter it with pure melee, i'd like to say just running attack when they do but that doesn't work to well. Should I use a crossbow? I was hoping I didn't need to carry extra gear just to deal with a single spell.

Always carry throwing weapons.

Easy counter.

And both kukris and black firebombs actually scale with stats, can get a pleasantly surprising amount of damage when they connect, and it least discourages spamming fresurge and the like.

Another small thing one could do, is always carry around a bow if possible.

Nobody expects to get hit by an arrow after fleeing for a sip of estus.

Yeah, crossbow works well enough. Health regen stuff to heal recover from small burns they do get off on you.
