Onyx blade... does it get better?
So I'm doing a pyro run and thought I would main the Onyx blade. I like the moveset, love the look, etc. But so far I'm really underwhelmed. At 30/30 my chaos infused lothric knight sword hits almost as hard, and obviously hits a lot quicker with less stamina drain. Sure there's the WA weapon buff, but then the damage is split 3 ways, and still under preforms what a dark or chaos infused claymore would do in AR. I've basically put it on the shelf and use the lothric or claymore instead. Am I missing something?

Just the opposite reaction to the witch's lock. Thought it would be a novelty, but I'm having a blast with it.

It's more fashionable, therefore it's better, even if the dps is lower.

yeah it gets better, you have 20 levels before soft cap at 40 40.

30/30 should get 487 2handed, while 40/40 gets 530 2handed. this is before the buff for both.

lothric knight SS gets 495 2handed at 30/30 and 509 at 40/40. this is unbuffable split damage.

Stats are min for both in str/dex so 14/18 and 30/30 or 40/40.

Sadly, that's what I thought. That is still terrible for a greatsword that's so slow in comparison, and its damage is split as well. Buffed its damage is split three ways, reminds me of the drake sword. Even with the WA buff then it's getting about what a claymore chaos or dark infused gets permanently. Guess what it has going for it is low non- int/faith stats requirements

I assumed the buff added more dark damage, not fire damage. Gonna have to check that out.

Yeah, checked, and confirmed. The buff is fire damage. I tried it out on some ghoulies who are vulnerable to fire, and they lit up and danced. And the jump in damage was definitely not as the result of dark damage, to which they were more resistant. Granted, apparently the buff is flat fire damage, so I think it's added after everything else is calculated maybe, and is probably better than normal.

Fast weapons are simply superior in this game. Lower stat requirements, lower weight, lower stamina consumption, much faster, less punishable, and only slightly less damage and range. straight swords, curved swords, and daggers dominate all fights. You do have the benefit of hyper armor with greatswords 2 handed, but that's only good for trading. Personally I like greatswords a lot, including the onyx blade, but using a demon's scar or longsword is generally better on a pyro. Lothric knight sword has higher requirements, but it's easily one of the best weapons on any build.

Oh I do fine with greatswords in PVE and PVP. I prefer the playstyle of GS on my melee characters over ss and cs weapons. "Dominate all fights" is a little strong,. advantage? yes. dominate? no.

But yeah, on this guy a SS is working better in most situations. This guy's main is the lothric SS with chaos infusion right now and it looks like it may stay that way, but when I decided on a pyro I thought I would be maining the onyx (look and moveset, I just liked both), but I'm WAY dissappointed in how it performs. My lothric outperforms in in terms of DPS, and I experimented with infusing claymores with dark and chaos, both crushed the Onyx even when the Onyx was WA buffed on most mobs. The low stat requirement compared to something like the claymore is the only thing going for it. That can be significant if you're trying to stay at meta level or below I guess.

I'm finishing this run as a pyro and still suck playing a caster, but it's a blast and the boss fights I ususally have any issues with are a breeze. I'm guessing that may change in Ringed City tho. considering I won't be doing any dedicated PvP with him, I may keep the stats needed for the claymore when I want to use it and take him to 130ish

Cool. I'm going to test some myself just out of curiosity, cant imagine the blade was meant to be this much of a runt in the class. It does have a nice range on it tho.

The issue with the Onyx is that at the same upgrade level most mobs I was doing about the same damage *per hit* using my lothric ss. It literally has none of the advantages over the ss that make things like slower speed a fair trade off.
