Obtain all Titanite Slabs - there are fifteen (eight in the base game, three in the Ashes of Ariandel DLC, and four in The Ringed City DLC) available per playthrough so it is highly recommended to get as many as possible per run.
Trade everything you want to trade with Pickle Pee, Pump-a-Rum.
Kill off all Crystal Lizards and Ravenous Crystal Lizards.
Collect all Estus Shards and Undead Bone Shards.
Collect all available Rings (note - all lower versions of rings are still available in all subsequent playthroughs, so don't worry if you missed any).
Defeat all Bosses, and Mini-Bosses.
Clear out the harder areas, like the Ringed City, to bring up your skills.
Buy any Ore and Gems that you need from upgraded vendors. It's recommended to stock up on Titanite Chunks, Twinkling Titanite, and Titanite Scales, as these will not be available until late into your next playthrough.
Infuse your weapons and Upgrade them as much as required.
Kill off NPCs to obtain their equipments and souls. Note that the Shrine Handmaid, Blacksmith Andre, and the Fire Keeper can be killed, but they will respawn without dropping any souls or items. There are no benefits to killing them, only drawbacks - killing the Handmaid will only increase the price of her wares by 20%, and Andre will refuse to help you anymore. The Fire Keeper doesn't change.
Grind your Covenant Items, for Achievements/Trophies, in either your first journey (since it is easier to defeat the enemies), or during New Game +2 (to have the best Item Discovery possible). The Rosaria's Fingers covenant should be accessed with caution, because any offerings to Rosaria will stop Sirris' questline and, by extention, lock off access to the Mound-Maker covenant if you missed the first way. Here are the required items for getting all covenant rewards:
30 Sunlight Medals for Warrior of Sunlight. These may be farmed from Lothric Knights.
30 Proof of a Concord Kepts for Blade of the Darkmoon. These may be farmed from Silver Knights.
30 Vertebrae Shackles for Mound-Maker. These may be farmed from Carthus Swordsmen.
30 Human Dregs for Aldritch Faithful. These may be farmed from Devout of the Deep.
30 Wolf's Blood Swordgrasses for Watchdogs of Farron. These may be farmed from Ghru Grunts and Ghru Shaman.
30 Pale Tongues for Rosaria's Fingers. These may be farmed from Darkwraiths.
30 Filanore's Spear Ornament for Spears of the Church (DLC Ringed City). These may be farmed from Ringed Knights.
It's a good checklist.
You get a slab for killing Nameless. You get another slab that's available for trading an item found after gundyr. Plus the soul weapons from those bosses, etc. But really, If playing through the game and seeing what it offers, doing boss fights, etc isn't worth it for you, then go ahead to journey 2... could just skip the whole game and call it done, really.
The drop rate on those things is painful, or I was farming the wrong ones... figured the first by the bonfire and the one in front of the church with the paired swords were quickest to get to and kill. I had 24 from being summoned as a spear of the church and figured I would just grind for the last few.... seriously, 250+ titanite chunks later, who knows how many full ringed knight sets, etc. I had three to show for my efforts.
Just a couple of other points:
a) In case I missed an Estus Shard/Undead Bone Shard, will there be a chance to get the remaining to 15 flasks at +10 (which, as I understand, is maximum) in the Journey 2?
b) Why is that so important to farm all that covenant stuff at the first journey? Is it that more difficult to do in a new journey?
a) in ng+ you will find the estus shards and undead bone shard again so that you can max out.
b) it's recommend because the enemies are harder on ng+ but you also can farm them in ng+
But the maximum is 15 +10 flasks, right? So when I finish NG with 14 +9, I would find one estus and one undead bone shard, yes?
Yes you could only upgrade until 10 and 15, but all estus and bone shard are back again in ng+ no matter how many left upgrade you need hence why when you've completed the upgrade the items later become useless..
Also don't forget to trade bone shard to pickle pee..
the trade is restricted to 1 per run. so if you trade divine blessing you can do it only 1 time in every run.
