turn on online. you go to network in settings and change launch setting to online and then restart the game. the game SHOULD launch with online gaming ready

You should farm it in Catacombs.

best place to farm it is the first bonfire

To summon other players in your game you have to be embered. The area boss must be alive.
But you can summon red signs without ember and boss.
