Weapon stat reduced after sharp infusion?
So I infused my Katana with a sharp gem & noticed the basic attack power number was reduced but the dexterity scaling increased to A. How do I know how much damage it makes when there’s no number?

At the beginning, your dex will be pretty low so raw will be the better infusion for a while (you'll be switching probably after wolnir). Make sure you focus on survivability (health) than damage, raw will do you good enough.

Also you can check the AR (attack rating) in the stats menu at the bottom middle panel. The top number will be your first weapon equipped.

You can see both the base damage drop and the scaling increase. In numbers, not just letters.

Then just calculate the difference.

Keep in mind that splitting damage types into for example physical and fire will basically always lead to a higher total attack rating, but since another defense comes into play the gap is not as big as it seems.

Base damage is reduced but scaling goes up. Whether it will do more harm or good depends on weapon base/post reduction damage/scaling and your stats.

I am just before Wolnir. I’m level 57 & have 22 in both strength & dex, 25 vigor, 23 end, 15 vitality etc. I’m not very good with the Greatswords though but my plan was to focus on dexterity.

The weapon was the Uchikatana & I switched from fire to sharp infusion - stupid?

No, even at 22 dex sharp infusion outperforms raw on the Uchi, and your weapon will get better as you put more into dex. You can apply resins for when fire is useful and still get more damage than with the fire infusion. If you're sure you''re going to focus on dex you might want to consider re-allocating what you've put into strength to Dex, keeping just enough str for the minimmum requirements for your weapon.

If you want to focus on dex weapons then I'd say to not put any more into strength, you won't need it.

Also infusing it sharp was the right idea. When you increase your dex stat you'll see your damage go up a good bit. You can also use things like straight swords, rapiers, curved swords, great curved swords and stuff sharp infused. I'd say to mostly avoid greathammers, great axes and most ultra greatswords. They're more for strength or refined builds.

If you do want to use an ultra greatsword, then I'd recommend the astora greatsword.

The reason I have that much strength was because I noticed I suck with the Greatswords & the straight swords seem to scale with strength?

I checked the attack in my stats & my sharp infused Astora Greatsword+4 is my best weapon in terms of damage. I use the Katana until I learn to manage my stamina better

They do scale with strength, but if you infuse them with sharp then their strength scaling will be reduced and the dex scaling will be increased.

So on dex build most of your weapons will get very little damage from having more strength, that's why people normally go for 16 to 20 at most.

The straghtswords like longsword and LKSS scale evenly with str and dex until you put an infusion on them. The LKSS for example is a beast with a dex build, it gets S scaling off of dex with a sharp infusion. Same with the Astora... that thing scales so well off of dex that I put a sharp infusion on it even for my 40str/40dex build.

S scaling? Isn’t A the best?

A is second to S

Ok. How confusing. But also fun to fiddle with stats & gear after Sekiro

If I go to Rosaria & join her covenant so I can respec my strength to dex instead - last time I did this I couldn't join Yorshka or continue Sirris questline?

Can I do it after a specific point so as to not ruin that questline?

You can join the covenant and repec without breaking Sirris questline. It only breaks it if you give Rosaria tongues for the covenant.

Though if you're still concerned you can just wait until you reach the Twin Princes, after that point her questline is finished.

You could just wait if you want, you'll only lose out on a few points of damage since your strength isn't too high.

Elemental infusions split your damage. It is better to have slightly less damage overall but in one form instead of 2.
