Uchigatana or Irithyll Straight Sword
Hi guys. Im looking for a bit of friendly advice on which weapon would be better to use for me going forward.
I have currently just left the undead settlement so will be heading through the road of sacrifices. Im currently about level 27, but to be honest I am really struggling to understand the finer mechanics involving weapon upgrades and their stats. Ive been using the Uchigatana since the start and it is currently +2. However having just gotten the Irithyll sword I cannot make up my mind which to use going forward.
Maybe it doesnt matter all that much?
I have other weapons ive obtained, but deffinately like the speed and attack patterns of these 2.
Any help would be appreciated.

depending on your stats its up to you. ISS is good as its got good combos and bonus frost damage which is extra nice but if your investing into Dexterity go for Utchigata. Just dont be surprised when someone calls you a weeb ok XD

I've had to accept the fact that weapon choice actually means very little. Keep them both and swap between them, maybe you'll begin to enjoy one more than the other.
then he has to upgrade both to see the damage potential and its a hassle to upgrade both imo
He could go on mugenmonkey and see the weapon ar with his stats and the maximum weapon upgrade. Guess he doesn't need to upgrade it that way

The upgrade system is something I am still trying to get my head around to be honest. I've still not really worked out if I should be reinforcing, infusing or both. I should probably spend a bit of time figuring it all out, but im just having too much fun in the game.
Its the first DS I've actually enjoyed and gotten into in a big way. I tried 1 and 2 several times but just didnt get on with them. 3 has just sorta "clicked".
Hoping to get through Bloodborne on my PS4 when done with this :)

Weapons require one of three reinforcing material

Titanite shard, Chunk etc (Most common can all be infused and buffed with a few exceptions)
Twinkiling Titanite (Cannot be infused or buffed with a few exceptions)
Titanite Scale (Boss weapons, cant be infused or buffed. Only goes to +5)

They all require a Titanite Slab to fully upgrade them all.

Infusements have two categories:
Physical : Sharp, Heavy, Refined and hollow gem (Can be buffed with resin or spells, generally better. applys physical damage)
Elemental : Simple, Crystal, Fire, Chaos etc (Cannot be Buffed, applys elemental damage, REALLY good in some cases except simple&Blessed, those one sucks. They're good for very slow fp and hp regen tho)

All gems sscales with your stats and alter your weapons scaling features. Physical applys to overall physical damage from the weapon and cant be altered with rings whilst elemental can be altered with rings (Clutch, Dragon crest etc).

To sum it up its best to reinforce your weapon to the max and infuse it with whatever scales best with your stats. With the Utchigata best go with sharp gem but with the irithilly straight sword it can only be reinforced with twiniling titanite

Wow man. That is super helpful! Thank you :)

Straight Swords are just the better of the 2 classes tbh. Of those 2: ISS all the way. It should be replaced by a better scaling SS at some point tho.

But consider using a Raw-infused Broadsword and leveling nothing but Vgr and End for a while, that's going to be more helpful. Later in the game you can change it for a weapon with scaling and level the respective stat(s) (Sharp-infusion and Dex is usually the best choice for SS).
