You know what I miss most from DS2 that DS3 doesn't have?
Human Mimicing NPC Invaders

Back in Dark Souls 2, for those who didn't play it (SHAME!), in the DLC there were NPC Invaders who would act out like human players.

There was the one that used emotes, was disguised as a white phantom, and would act "helpful" but the moment you turned your back to activate a switch it led you to, it'd backstab you for what was basically a 1-hit kill, and then use the decapitate emote or no-way gesture if you die like a real player would

Or the one knight who used chameleon to look like a box in a room full of boxes.

The one who actually used a variety of pine resins

And even the one that will drop a "I'm Sorry" carving after they killed you.

After the original NPC invaders and how easy they were.
Invade, hit em enough times, they die, boom... repeat
It was amazing to have these NPC's have a bit more "life" to them. Add more variety to things.

But then in Dark Souls 3, all the NPC invaders returned to just... "meh"

The only thing that caught me off guard was when the invader Creighton ran out of estus, so he popped a divine blessing.
Didn't expect that.

Vilhelm in the DLC is decent. He uses healing miracles with the talisman weapon art so you can't interrupt him and he uses that one spell that silences you if you're attacking him with magic.

I never used magic against him so I never saw him do that.

I watched a guy fight the Pyromancer in the DLC and the whole time all the NPC did was

Running slash attack. Big fireball. Sentry Fireball.

That was it! He literally does nothing else.

Yeah he was pretty standard as far as NPC invaders go
It wasnt just maldron that could be impersonated, some units were human sized and if you aquired the armor peices and use the ring that makes you look human, then you could blend in with certain mobs, it was great.

easy fix we need more people doing roleplay/cosplay.
No, most of the NPCs just did gestures and stuff. Maldron was cool, though. As it is, summons in DS3 also emote when met with certain areas or objects.
I mean, Tsorig or w/e his name is does gestures.

Yeah, Tsorig is the only NPC I can think of acting anything like OP mentions. He does the "My Thanks" emote when he kills you. All NPC invaders just try to kill you and actually don't make a sound when you hurt them. Against players you can hear their voice cues when they take damage.

I guess some of them do emotes right as you summon them but they act "normal" afterwards.

Sounds like a lot of fun though in DS2. I like the sneaky one that backstabs you.

That one caused me to almost break my controller.

Not particularly. He just does the "By my sword" emote upon summoning, and the Londor Pale Shade does the "Duel bow", and Yellowfinger Heysel does "Proper bow". You receive all of these emotes and then they never do them again. Nothing close to player like actions, they don't even sprint!

See the thing is though is that they use specific emotes just so you can learn them.
It doesn't really feel unique (even though it's their emote)

It wasn't something that was a natural bit of their character.

When I get to Abyss watchers, I say to myself
"Better summon Gottard to get the "By My Sword" gesture!"

Same with Tsorg and the others.

In DS2, the decapitate emote the NPC uses (which is 1 of 2 gestures they might use, based on HP loss) is something you get elsewhere. It's something most players would have at that point so it makes them feel more, blended in, with the playerbase.

Take the NPC who turns into a box.
If you go for the treasure chest near him, he'll spring out and attack.
But if you avoid the chest and go up the stairs... he will follow you.
He will slide around as the box, keeping a distance from you and when you jump off the ledge back onto the main route, if he's near he will spring off as well and try and do a downward attack on you
Or, if you go back and see him as the box when he's coming up the stairs he'll stop then just charge at you and attack knowing he was found out.
He doesn't wait for you to attack first.

What this does by having them act like players is it adds a level of trickery to you. When a NPC invades, if it's the first time going through you don't truely know if it's a player or a NPC.
Players like naming themselves all official like "Grizwold of Carim" and what-not.
By acting like a player it can trick you into thinking it's a player, making you face the situation completely differently.
When "Knight Kirk" invaded in dark souls 1, I swear to you I thought it was a player cause Kirk seemed like a name a NPC wouldn't have. (I kept thinking "...Captain Kirk?"

Take the NPC that backstabs you. Unlike every NPC in Dark Souls 3 who chugs an estus when hurt, right there on the spot, when he gets hurt you know what he does?
He runs away! He sprints the heck outta there, full speed, making his way to a safe location and then he heals and waits. He then goes for ambush tactics, running when you get the drop on him. He runs, using monsters in the area for cover.
Stuff players do, but this is a NPC!
It's fregin genius!

I don't miss them, you know why? Because I wouldn't miss it, if the game hasn't npc invasions at all. Nothing is more annoying, then a crappy ai, that is only hard to beat because it deals 3 times the damage and has 4 times the hp a normal player can have.

Fromsoftware suck at making hostile npcs.

Assassin Maldron was a pain in the a**, but he together with Jester Thomas were my favorite NPC invaders in ds2 and I wanted to make those builds, so that they can come back to life! >:3
Yeah, that added a little live to them, shame that ds2s invaders were cheating scumbags though...
