Valley of Defilement was better if we're going for tedious poison swamps.
Maybe for atmosphere and performance, but for enemy design, the best is obviously Lost Izalith, with hands-down the best boss, the best enemy variety, and the best run-up ever.
*curls into the brace position*

blighttown was the best area in all the ds games. As for ds3? Grand archives or irithyll

but blighttown was a masterpiece! Those toxic dart undeads where just lovely! And you could finally feel like a real peasant with your 5 fps.

on a more serious note dead burg is probably my favourite area overall. Although I like the forest and sens fortress aswell

Undead Burg is a tad too linear. Combind it with Undead Parish and you got yourself a deal.

also you can vote multiple times
Time to vote for all the worst areas 100+ times.
Didn't realise so many people liked Irithyll Dungeon/Profaned, weird.

Irithyll Dungeon is a mixed bag. I'd say it gets atmosphere better than Latria, but the level design is so short and off.

Yeah it's easy to get out of the dungeon in no time. TBH I preferred the atmosphere in Latria but differing opinions ey.
Looking over the poll I discovered I don't really love any of the areas, just like, most are tolerable at best, maybe im having an off day haha!

I think my one problem with Latria's atmosphere would be the absolutely god awful DeS voice acting. "Please! Help me!" "Graaaaaah!" "Myar!".

That is true, mixed in with the awful singing.

First off, if you do include multiple choices, it defeats the whole purpose of the poll. Because some options are going to get a vote "for the lulz". Like how someone voted for Consumed King's Gardens. The only saving grace of that place is how short it is. Which is grapsing at straws, really. Anyhow, let's do it in order:

Firelink and its surroundings: Meh. If it included Untended as well, I'd consider it nice due to how mirrored it is.

High Wall: Meh.

Settlement: Meh.

Road of Sacrifices: Meh

Farron Keep: Interesting. But more from a lore standpoint than from a gameplay one.

Cathedral of the Deep: If we ignore sludge around giants(...horrible), it is actually pretty nicely designed. A lot of looping back into central bonfire and clever level designs. Doesn't look that impressive and is kinda boring, but mechanically? Mechanically, it's #1, for sure!

Catacombs: Interesting, but more mechanically than artistically. Otherwise, it's rather boring.

Smouldering Lake: Very nice visually and thematically. Also, from the lore standpoint. It's just...it's a flat surface with few enemies and Ballista Shots. Mechanically it's COMPLETELY LAME.

Irithyll: Mechanically it's ok. Nothing spectacular, but there are some nice loops. Visually and thematically? Yeah, artistically it has got to be #1. I can't see nor am I willing to even allow it that there's a place more beautiful, yet haunting(...haunting beauty?) than this one. I don't like AL + Archer cheap copy paste though. It was completely unnecessary. Ok, maybe not AL, but the Archer part...it isn't even difficult, just plain annoying and unnecessary(and now there are FIVE of them!)

Dungeon + Capital: Dungeon has some neat mechanical ideas, sure. Otherwise, it's a very creepy place. Almost sotonistic. Especially near the entrance to Profaned where those Jailors have a Congregation. Really, what's up with that and why are they circling that pillar? Capital otoh...talk about missed opportunity! And Yhorm! My heart ached when I realized that such a beautiful boss was wasted on "LOOK AT THESE MECHANICS!". /facepalm. On average, they should win I think, yes. Even if they don't do anything for me(except that Capital infuriates me).

Ariandel: A very nice snowy area. I haven't played it though, so I wouldn't know exactly. But it looks nice enough.

Lothric Castle + Archives: Very nice and often ingenious. Thematically, Archives are a bunch of references to not only previous games, but to previous encounters as well(...Crystal Sage? wtf is he doing there?). And hence the padding of the worst kind. But I like it. Something about that combination of colors in Archives is pleasing. Black + Dark Blue + Dark Gold. Much better than the weird blue / white / light brown crap of Duke's Archives. Also one of the better areas even if thematically, it should've been visited earlier or not at all. And the building built on roofs of other buildings...sure. Whatever.

Garden: ♥♥♥♥ THIS PLACE! /puke (now, I wonder whether is that reaction worse or the /meh one?)

Graves: Very nice mirroring of Firelink. If you included it together with FLS, it'd have been one of top contenders as well.

Kiln: First of all, Where is the Kiln? I don't see it, do you? Second, it's...nothing really. A short jaunt then a very annoying / OP boss. /meh

Dreg Heap: A lot of nice ideas with Ash Piles etc. It's actually a very nice from both artistic(something about inevitability of fate{I don't agree, but /meh} and collapse of civilizations) and mechanical perspectives. I don't understand why it doesn't have more votes.

Ringed City: Yes, it is very nice indeed. But kinda too small? Restricted? But you could say this for Irithyll too. And Irithyll is leagues above Ringed concerning aesthetic values.

My list would go somewhat like this:

1. Irithyll + Anor
2. Cathedral of the Deep
3. The Grand Archives
4. Firelink + Graves
5. Smouldering Lake
6. Ringed City
7. Heap
8. Ariandel
9. Castle Lothric
10. Dungeons + Capital
11. Farron
12. Catacombs

Can't rank others because they all fall around 13-14 place. They're equally weak imo.
I just love Irithyll/gank city since its amazing to invade and its just fun to jump of ledges to get away from ganks. Also love grand archives for the verticality and the design. I could just imagine sitting there in the dark reading books for hours.

I love how you call stuff haunting/scary since I sadly never had that feeling in any dark souls game. The only thing I really care about is how I can get all Items/kill the enemies. I guess I have played ds too much to really appreciate its art.

They didn't I just got bored and cast 11 votes on it to show that being able to vote multiple times brings no significant result
