Best starting class?
I was thinking about getting ds3, and I wanted to know which class would be best for starting. I'm assuming not any melee based classes since it's riskier getting up and close to anything dangerous.

Actually, the Knight is best, due to its decent armor, good melee stats, and high health.

Alright, I just assumed otherwise from a guide I saw about ds1 a while back. Thanks for the input!

Best starting class for a new player: take a knight. But if you don't like a melee build, go with a pyromancer.
if you are new to soul series you should go Knight
if you have experience, Deprived is the best

Knight has the best staring gear, pick warrior if you plan on doing a full str build with no spells.

The starting class is not really Important for PvE, since you will most certainly not stop at Soul Level 125. ( Or any other Meta Soul level. ). Read the description of the classes and decide, what sounds fun to you. As a Knight, for example, you will still be able to learn Pyormancies later on.

God, I'm horrible at making long term decisions, like which class to choose... I've never played a Mage archetype and I'm not a huge fan of running in with a big-ass sword decapitating people, so I'll go with the knight. Thanks for the feedback :P

I prefer Warrior, Deprived and Pyro (specifically for pyromancy builds).

Your're welcome. Remember, choosing a class is just for the Stats. You can still learn Sorceries.

Pretty much this... Starting equipment doesn't matter that much, since you can level up however you want from there, and you probably won't be using the starting equipment for the whole game.

think most people go with knight if you intend to build a melee, pyro for mage, deprive for ocd.

Realyy doesnt matter all that much. By late game you'll already be creating your character absed around how you want your build to be.
Melee classes can actually be easier to play than casters in DS, overall. At least until you reach higher levels and get a good library of spells under your belt. Even then, you're most likely sacrificing a bit of survivability for other stats and relying on a resource more finite than swinging a big sword at things as your primary means of killing stuff. Although again, later in the game you can get weapons buffed in ways which benefit from your caster stats rather than the usual melee-boosting stats.

On the other hand, some boss fights are laughably easy with the right spells.

It all comes down to what you want to do but as others have said, your starting "class" is just that: the achetype you startout with and are then free to develop as you please. In no way something which locks you in to a certain playstyle from the outset.
