I think it's better to do it after because that optional boss is way harder than final boss.
Remember that there two (in one boss fight) you'll be fighting in Archdragon Peak; one is indeed weak to lightning while the other is lightning himself.
So, yes, better have a good selection of weapons which are strong against the two - assuming you're going full melee.

However the Nameless king himself is resistant to both lightning and forst as well as bleeding (though you can still proc bleeding) and is 100% immune to poison and toxic.
He is vulnurable to fire, for some reason that is, and vulnurable to dark, which is logic considering where he came from.
To condense it, hit the dragon with lightning or frost, where as lightning is best.
For the second phase grab either a fire or dark weapon to end the kings reign.
