How do you deal with Ledo's great hammer?

The weapon art is so full of♥♥♥♥♥♥ It is nearly instant, all-around damage that staggers you into a guaranteed followup with the smackdown. I can barely survive that with my sl 175 character with lapp's armor 35 vigor and ring of steel protection +3 so I imagine it would one-shot everyone else. Not only does the ledo player also get hyperarmor, but because it's a greathammer he's wielding, you can't counter his move with your own poise attacks. Therefore, the ledo player can decide to simply tank any of your attacks, at any time, and instantly 1-shot you with the weapon art, and if you...well, ATTACK, which is necessary to win, he will instantly kill you. I don't get it, how is that balanced?

I cannot NOT attack him otherwise I will never win.
He can simply wait for me to do this and press ctrl (on PC) to win. I can't stop him from doing that either.
As soon as he does that, there is no way for me to not eat the combo. (I tried rolling but the move is too fast)
Literally, all he needs to do is wait for me to attack and start the weapon art instead of rolling away when he sees me swing.

The only thing I can think of is to whittle them down from range but DS3 was never about anything ranged thanks to rolling.

Don't be as direct as you may be used to.

Quickstep. Quickstep weapons can deal with everything thats big and slow.
Everytime i see someone wielding those i know its easy win confirmed.

tbh fire bombs. it normally gets them to do running r1's at you and its pretty easily parryable

Try a faster weapon so you can hit em and roll out before he attacks or just backstab when they go for the wa.

take a long ass straight sword, and space it, if the greathammer player is bad, he will attack u even when he cant hit u, just attack between his attack and there u have it, a free win. no running attacks required, just stay at the edge of his attack range and rape him

or use ranged weapons

Stomp doesn't work, you get staggered with the first connection of the weapon art, then comes the overhead smackdown punishment, I did try that one. Ledo's hammer does extra dmg to poise so you get staggered more easily.

But yeah, really any fast weapons or long-ranged weapons will make the fight easier. The weapon art leave huge opening and opportunity for a backstab.

First of all, you might want to get your vigour up to 44 if you want to do some tanking. 44 is the second softcap.

But most people 2-hand great hammers, and more people 2-hand Ledo's, so parrying wouldn't be an option for that.

Quickstep is a good call here, what might also be interesting is changing your dogde pattern, most player dogde to the right. You can easily surprise ppl dogding forward or in a different direction each time ;)

But most people aren't stupid enough to keep swinging until they're completely out of stamina.
