Transparent characters

When I play alone (not using ember) there are transparent players rolling around. When I get closer to them, they dissappear. Who are they? Or do I have multiple personality disorder?

Those are other players, playing the game just like you are. Nothing too terribly exciting, really, you can't interact with them or vice versa.
