What do the differing phantom colors mean?

Invaders: Red, Purple,

Summons: Yellow, White

gold invader: too much sunny d
blue covenant invader: casuals trying to farm covenant rewards and gank the gankers

white summon: vanilla
gold summon; certified gankers
purple summons; pretend to be invader to gank you with gankers
dark blue summons; casuals desperate for rewards
light blue summons; casuals desperate for rewards who made it half way through the game.

Red phantoms are normal invaders, orange phantoms are people who invade you with the sunbro covenant on (Makes perfect sense, I know), purple phantoms are people who invade you with the Mound Makers on and can help you if they want, blue-ish red phantoms are people who invade you automatically in an area they're defending, white phantoms are normal people you summon to gank a boss, and yellow phantoms are like white phantoms, but they've got the sunbro covenant on and everyone gets sunlight medals if they kill a boss with you.

Gonna ignore serassi's and give you the real answer

It really isn't a difference, just what covenant they have equipped
Invaders
Red: Either, no covenant equipped, a covenant that doesn't give a invading color equipped, or rosaria's equipped
Yellow-ish Res: Warriors of the Sunlight
Purple: Mound makers
Red-ish blue: Aldrich Faithful or Farron Watchdogs
Summons
Yellow: Warriors of the sunlight
White: Either no covenant equipped, or a covenant that doesn't have any colors for summons
Blue: Blue sentinel or Darkmoon Blade.
Purple: Mound Maker (they can still attack you though, they also can't be summoned for bosses)

In general, as a host, you should:
Always kill the reds (even the "Robin Hood" reds); Kill all Purples (Archdeacon McDonnell will never wake up from his hangover) & f*ck a MM. Doesn't matter if you summon their unmistakable signs or not, kill them.

Sunbros (aka incandescent gold sign summons) are in it for the GLORY (not souls or rewards); and finally the white phantoms/signs are just trying to co-op without a bunch of covenent BS.

untrue white ring turns you into a white phantom and untrue dark ring turns you into a host of ember with no hollowing.
