Get a friend to try different parriable moves for different weapons on you and practice your timing. Be aware that because this game is P2P the timing will depend on how much latency there is between you and your opponent. If there's considerable latency I suggest you do no try to parry at all.

A good way to see how much latency there is between you and your opponent is to throw a throwing knife/shiv and time the difference between when the knife hits the opponent and when he actually takes damage, anything more than about 3/4 of a second and reaction parries are nigh impossible.

Practice, practice, practice and learn to calculate latency until you got gud

You're training. Dying is only the signs of progression. The point downs are something u should never be bothered with.
1. It only gets you.
2. You're training!
3. Have a taste of the sweet sound!

But like the others say. Parrying is not a good option cuz of the latency. But if you have good connection, go for it. Until you git gud!
You're gonna hear this a lot...

step 1:git
step 2:gud
step 3:block 1st or 2 attacks(for straight swords, katanas, and curved swords), go for the parry
keep in mind that works best for target shield

also for hammers, greatswords, curved greatswords block the 1st hit and parry the second

pvp parrying? caestus/parry shield unless you're experienced. caestus parry comes out instantly with no delay, and this makes it pretty much only good for parrying someone while they're spamming r1 and staggerlocking you for free damage. also useful for katana running r1 spammers. parry shields (such as the target shield) are great for parrying rolling, running, and great weapon light attacks, but they're mostly based on prediction instead of reaction, so if someone's playing unpredictably or expects you to parry you're going to have a tough time. also remember you can't parry 2-handed great weapons (great hammer, greataxe, and ultra greatsword). i'd also test how bad your latency is between you and your opponent, if it's really laggy (like a 1-second delay for damage to register or the other player's teleporting around) don't even try parrying, you'll fail unless you get lucky. other than that, practice pve parries against npcs blahblahblah. also remember that rolling attacks on any weapon are always parriable, and they're very, very easy to parry if you're sure the enemy is performing a rolling attack. just practice in the arena/pontiff's until you meet a player who's playing predictably.
