Greataxes are amazing in that even if you whiff, the shockwaves can still stagger enemies/players. Compare that with Yhorm's/Great Machete which has a very long range, you'll see why many people still use them.
not as broken as SS
Huh, Ive heard a lot of people were very dissapointed in Eleonora, mainly though because it takes scales instead of twinkling titanite. That weapon art is very alluring though, seems like it would be very useful. I used the greataxe and earth seeker on other characters of mine and found them to be extremely good, higher damage than great hammers, and just about highest in the game aside from the stupid OP ones.
I know greataxes are great, but the smaller ones seemed to be very unpopular, never seen anyone online with one equipped, only see the greataxes every now and then. Makes me think they arent good for that reason.
Dragonslayer axe is the closest, but i hate the fact that its a gimmick weapon (must be constatly buffed with lighting to deal decent damage to other players and enemies that use player-like defenses)
Great Hammers are better if you know your timing. A fully charged R2/RT does slightly more damage than a backstab and almost always flattens enemies/players when it lands, giving you both extra damage and more breathing room for estus/buffs/whatever and you can change your attacks direction when you attack so you can catch backstab fishers.
All in all, both categories are fantastic. After trying even the normal Great Machete and Vordt's Hammer. I fell in love and never went back to Ultra Greatswords.
I use the Milwood Battleaxe on my strength build. It's pretty effective with most infusions or buffs. Pretty fun weapon too with it's staggering charge. I'd recommend it if you're playing a strength build and just want to screw with people by using the WA creatively.
