SO how important is it that Hawkwood in Archdragon Peak after the Belfry bonfire lives?

We kill the serpent dudes and he some reason decides to always attacks the rollie pollie dude on the side. Which results in him falling to his death. I can reset it by killing myself.

But how important is it for him to live?

you dont have to kill yourself, just exit the game to main menu and reload and you can resummon him.

he is essential to survive if you want to complete his quest.

trust me if he jumps off a cliff just reload the game and he can be summoned again, you dont need to kill yourself.

What? I thought all you needed to do was exhaust his dialogue so he leaves the shrine, get the torso stone and then kill him at watchers arena...

I've never summoned him and completed his quest a few times

That isn't true. Summoning him is entirely optional. Although it's really cool to path of the dragon together, It's not required.
