Not that armor stats actually matter, but people like to think it does.
The set actually looks kinda nice. In addition it is an armor set for a specific group of knights so he isn't the only one to look like this. The difference is the pants have um... dried urine on them. Ignoring the flavor text they look just fine. The big reason they are actually a joke tends to be the number of bad/new players using them so the perceived perception someone wearing them sucks.
Armor stats do matter but the difference is negligible unless stacking heavier armor with other defensive boosters. Very helpful when doing my low level runs (tho admittedly majority of my coop is in loin cloth + thrall/pharis hat only).
