So, is there a bug with this boss? First few times I fought him, there was no music, no sounds when hitting him, his ball sacks never explode, he's generally easier to hit (with melee), and this supposed second phase after falling down a pit never happens. Almost had him beat with just 1 hit left to go, but got too anxious to land it and died.

In my frustration, I did do one thing different. When I ran back to him, I just started the fight right away without my usual clearing out of the undead in the area. Did this for the next few attempts as I was frustrated, but on each of those attempts, there was music, hit noises, his weird ball sacks actually explode, and the second phase did occur. It seemed to be the actual proper fight I read about.

Again, in frustration, I decided to cool down, relax, and clear the undead once again before starting the fight as I felt they were getting too much in the way at the start. Wouldn't you know, once again, no music, no hit sounds, ball sacks won't explode, boss takes damage more easily again, and no phase 2. This time I beat him and only after he died did the floor collapse, but he was already dead, so no phase 2 at all.

Is this some sort of bug where the fight unintentionally becomes easier if you clear the undead before starting the fight? I can't imagine that's a gimme for players patiently taking out the undead first. The easier version of the fight only ever happened when I precleared the undead, but just starting the fight without clearing seems to trigger the actual fight.

To ne honest i´m not really sure, for me the boss fight always starts when i get close to the tree, never experienced anything like that really X_X

Yeah when you get close, but for me it would be different depending on whether I cleared the undead in the area before getting close to the tree or not.

So no one seems to have noticed this? Just me? Lucky me getting a break on this boss I guess.

It does sound like something is wrong. I usually trigger boss by killing the red eyed worker and then only some of his boils are vulnerable in phase 1
Ya, to be exact, I was killing all the undead, 1 by 1, EXCEPT for the one closest to the tree. That one is too close to aggro without the tree also coming up. Maybe if I shot it with an arrow or spell I could aggro and kill it without starting the fight, but I never did since it was a quick 2 shot kill while the tree still gets up. If anybody is in that area of the game and wants to try and replicate that, feel free.
