but in general you dont have much interaction with most of the NPCs to have a "relationship" and most of them dont have too much in terms of backstory, just enough to fill their role in the overall lore
I can't put judgement on a speculative storyline. So i can only say what i say pretty often: Yes, if it's done well. No, if not.
Shanalotte and Fire Keeper killed this feeling.
What I was always missing in Dark Souls 2 and 3 is character to get attached to, like mighty Solaire was. Not only he helped You A LOT but also his character is created in such a way, like, dunno.. maybe I am just being sentimental.
You said it yourself. There are comrades in every game. And Solaire even fights with you potentially to the very end ;).
Also she does have a character, she wants certain endings depending on if you give her the eyes or not. And she expresses that need of hers.
