are you asking what your vigor should be to not get one shotted? because if you are, it depends on your level, if you're at endgame probably like between 30 and 40

Dodging is the best defence. Or, use any 100% physical damage reduction shield. His attacks are mostly physical. Though, I guess 20 should be enough?

27 for a good amount of hp so you can forget to lv up vigor for a good time. Gael is a very cool bossfight, i never felt like he was op. If you get oneshotted study his patterns and lern how to dodge. If you have very low hp everyone i that dlc will oneshot you

His delayed attacks are horrible. I even liked the Midir fight more than this one.

Your name is quite fitting. You should blame yourself for being bad. Gael's attacks are 1000x more telegraphed than Soul of Cinder's.

If the boss kills you with his moveset and you don't understand it, it's your fault. I'm talking in general. Midir for example was interesting but maybe too high on damage, and let the blattle be less interesting for me. In Dark souls we should follow The Rule:

Yes, sorry. Like stated above, between 30-40. That's probably impossible for casters but casters simply have to risk it for being glass cannons (the meta 27 should be ok for casters to not get oneshot).

It's pretty easy to survive with soft-cap Vigor of 27 points. 20-25 is still doable, but best ember up.
Also what helped me a lot to negate some of the damage - Ring of Steel Protection, since in phase 2 and 3 Gaels damage is still about 50% physical (rest - should be Dark or something like that). You find +3 version right at the begining. Right before first 2 Lothric Knights there's a path that curves around that building - at the end of it is where you find the ring.

Use these:

• Ring of Favor
  
• Ring of Steel Protection
  
• Speckled Stoneplate Ring
