There is a small tutorial area you start in with messages on the ground to read, but for the most part you have to discover it yourself or use google etc.

yes, it DOES give a basic tutorial...but.
DO NOT COMPLAIN IF IT IS TOO HARD!
a LOT of threads here complain they want a refund because of the difficulty, but the thing is: this game is VERY hard to learn and play. don't learn it, and you're likely to be making another "i want a refund" thread...so.

are you ready?

there is only a very little tutorial telling you how to controll your character , like r1(ps) rb (xbox) for fast attack or l1/lb for blocking . other then that this is all you get , but you have a unlimited ammount of guides you can find in the net . the game never tells you directly where to go oder what to do next . its alla bout exploring and learning in this game . dont do the same mistake twice. you have to be willing to learn or you will not have a good time . but if you do you may find one of the best games ever. also you can play this game with mouse and keyboard but i would strongly recommend controller . not only because this game works better but also because all other 4 souls like games are console exclusive ( bloodborne/demon´s souls) or the mouse and keyboard support is ♥♥♥♥ ( dark souls 1 and 2) .so you better play with controller from the beginning .

Okey, thats what I thought, I like it. One more question, the places like "bonefire" etc, are they explained, like what are they used for etc or it's all up to me? Either way I'm "warming" myself up with little bit of a Dark Soulish clone --> Lords of Fallen - just to get the idea what I can expect :) Can't wait to get it

Bonfires are pretty straightforward, they:

-heal you and cures all status ailemnts
-refill your estus flask (main healing items in the game)
-reset enemy spawns except bosses and a few other exceptions
-allows you to automatically warp to any other bonfire you've visited at least once

Read the descriptions on everything and talk to everyone and you'll be fine. :praisesun:

Before you make up your mind, I gotta go "NOES BUY DS2:SotFS INSTEAD"... DS3 is shorter and more linear than its predecessors, and has some game balance problems and a lot of extra steps for stuff that feels unnecessary. Example: if you want to use Miracles (white magic spells), you not only need to find the teacher - you have to befriend an NPC spamming an area with giant arrows, retrieve an item from that area now when it's safe, give it to the main shopkeeper, buy one of the keys that unlocks in her shop, do a dungeon unlocked by that key, and THEN you can recruit her. And you need to give her a bunch of tomes from later areas to unlock the really good spells.

There's a bunch of other issues as well, like the game's invasion system ruining the experience for both co-oping players and invaders (I've experienced that first-hand from both sides) and the game being a big resource hog even on lowest settings, and you can get almost twice as much content for the same price if you buy Dark Souls 2 Scholar of The First Sin (that edition includes three DLC areas on top of the already huge game world). It's also a bit more welcoming to new players with a gradual change from living to undead (you lose 5% of your HP each time you die instead of half/30% at once) and a greater selection of healing items, and you can take on the game's four main paths in any order you like. There also basically are TWO tutorial areas in DS2, the tutorial area Things Betwixt and the skippable-but-full-of-easy-enemies-and-rectuitable-NPCs-and-nice-loot first dungeon Forest of Fallen Giants.

Anyway, enough ranting. :P DS2 has more stuff to do and more variety and is overall less frustrating to play from my experiences (350h DS2, 120h DS3), DS3 looks better and plays faster but has some pretty annoying balance issues.

Just don't play as a caster of any type and you should be fine. Spells in DS3 are much worse than in DS1 & 2 and you will be frustrated if your first Dark Souls experience is Dark Souls 3 as a very weak sorcerer.

@Yal about the trieving that item from said area it's perfectly safe to do it without befriending the other npc, I always do it that way. Anyway, Dark souls 2 does have more bosses but the quality of said bosses is also lower in most cases. All bosses in DS3 are interesting in their own way.

And to be honest don't be discouraged by comments of people here, nearly all builds and weapons are viable even if some say they aren't. The only difference is that some weapons work really efficient against many enemies (mainly fast weapons), but slower weapons often have things to offset it, such as staggering enemies more easily and doing more damage per swing.

Anything si viable if you are good enough, the point is that it is not balanced: it is dramatically easier to play with a humble straight sword than as a pure caster.

You are given guidance for the essential controls for the game, but the rest is really up to you to discover (which is partly what Dark Souls is all about).

Get the first dark souls. PC port has a few easily fixed issues.
A lot of things in this game, ESPECIALLY the final boss will be lost on you if you dont play the first one.

While I agree that miracles & sorceries are boring af, pyromancies are really fun to use, and perfectly viable in PvE and PvP.

make sure your armour weight is 69.9% or lower. If its heavier you main dodge (rolling) becomes extremely slowed. Good luck...
