Are sorcery catalysts worth upgrading?

Its my first time doing a magic build and don't want to waste the titanite to buff something that will be overshadowed later on.

Yes, upgrading catalysts makes spells cast through them stronger. As for wasting titanite, the only thing you need to worry about are titanite slabs. They are the only limited resource.

It depends on how much int you plan to put points into. Court sorcerer catalyst is really good but is later in the game, the crystal one is the most powerfull when using the buff, less powerfull than the Court one without.

If you don't plan to go too high with int the heretic catalyst I think is the best option, and is obtainable pretty soon, meanwhile the starting one is good enough.

On a seperate note, is it better to do a crystal infusion or keep the weapon Raw and use magic weapon?

Weapon buffs are always going to be stronger than an infusion as long as you have high int. If I'm on my dedicated caster I always opt for the infusion though to not only save fp but also time because I hate having to buff my weapon everytime. Sometimes you might not have enough time to buff in pvp so you'll be stuck with a weak weapon in fights.
