(Fixed Exception: 0xC0000005) Dark Souls crash on start

Hey All,

Hoping someone can help a bit here. When I attempt to start Dark Souls 3 I get a windows error and a crash to the desktop. The game loaded the very first time and I started to change the key bindings however I exited before I started playing and the game didn't exit properly. I was unable to access my machine and had to perform a hard reboot. After this the game hasn't started, I've performed a steam check of the file system and after interigating the minidump file I find the following error in the summary:

Exception Information: The thread tried to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access.

Anyone ever encounter this before or have any suggestions?

TLDR, game wont start fully

Okay quick update, still looking for a resolution but have added the following troubleshooting:

Attempted compatability mode
Running as Administrator
Editing game config files to be window with low rez
Setting to Nvidia optimized settings
Ran check disk on all drives
Verfied using latest video, windows, etc. drivers

Well I did hear this game was punishing, I just figured it would be a bit more graphically pleasing when it nailed me to the wall...

Ran sfc
Ran CCleaner
Ran Wipe
Attempted system restore
Manually cleared pagefilie, swap file, etc.

So I uninstalled steam and all games then reinstalled with same error. Anyone have a clue here?

Finnaly fixed the error. If you're having the Exception Code: 0xC0000005 error here's what I've done to repair the problem.

1) Install the following:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/Download/confirmation.aspx?id=35
2) Find the game folder and navigate to the following folder "DARK SOULS III\_CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010"
3) Run DXSETUP.exe
4) Navigate to the following folder "DARK SOULS III\_CommonRedist\vcredist\2012"
5) Run vcredist_x64.exe or the 86 if you're on a 32 bit architecture
6) Restart your system

Oh, I also deleted all of the registry keys associated with the firewall rules before that so it might have been related to the fix but I don't think it was impactful.

Check for old DSFIX files. Had to remove them to get the game to start:

Alright, after a FRUSTRATING evening after having downloaded dark souls remastered on my windows 10 notebook with an nvidia 1050, I finally found out how to get the game to lauch.

It would give errors in the event log,

and via some forum posts, blog posts and everything, I tried dsfix, which didn't help. I then saw a blog post that it was made for the resolution of 1024x768

So I changed my desktop resolution to 1024x768.

IT LAUNCHED!

Then when it had lauched in the abysmal resolution I was able to change the settings to 1920 x 1080 and quit the game. I changed my desktop resolution settings back to 1920 x 1080 and now dark souls remastered launches in full screen hd

I post this answer here because this is one of the top search results on this issue.
I hope this will also provide a solution for anybody else.

This unlikely to be a part of the solution as the required components seem to be bundled with the game and moreover would be installed by steam on launch.


EDIT: DS3 uses DirectX11 and would not have support for legacy APIs so installing this would not make a difference. Reinstall/repair the other mentioned DirectX components for any possible effect.
