Sudden Strike 4

Line of sight is very narrow!
I have my eyes on SS4 but one thing puts me off is the fact that the line of sight is very very narrow!

This isn't late 90s and early 2000s where we ran those small 1024x768 resolution monitors, we have 4k gaming now, and 1080p is the norm for many average gamers these days, and 1440p 144Hz is the sweet spot for many competitive gamers, and yet we have that 1024x768 era line of sight and gameplay.

Has there been any plans to change this, at least add an option to adjust so players can tweak as their liking.

Another off-topic is, from what I've seen in gameplay videos, enemies are spotting players from far away all the time, is this still true in today's game or has it been patched/updated?

I think the line of sight is good. This is Sudden Strike. Thanks to the line of sight the game play includes hide and seek, and catch the mouse. Use strategic points on the map to make eyes. Watch and hear the dark areas and you may see and hear unit movements when tree are cut by tanks. The game also shows icons of nearby units. In a later stadium, the line of sight of an officer and later the general might have more line of sight. I understand your arguments, but I think the developers have done it right.

why is the viewing range so short? are they blind?.

Limited Line of Sight is a staple of the series. However, you likely feel the line of sight is particularly bad because you are inexperienced. The terrain is 3D modeled. You likely have your infantry behind a hill or obstacle. Try to garrison small structures or occupy hills just below the crest (facing the side you expect your enemy) to boost your sight range :-)

Very true.

SS4 is a different RTS game as you perhaps know from other RTS games. Compared to other games the line of sight of SS4 seems to be narrow, it is not too narrow and it makes the game great. It is your skills to make eye sight. The line of sight is an important element of the game you need to master. I love this. because it makes the game truely RTS. Play MP and you will experience it yourself.

It seems like the game is just not for me which is a big bummer because I like the art style and atmosphere, but I like a more realistic approach in WWII games, we already have CoH series, Men of War series, Blitzkrieg 3, etc. which all of them play more or less the same in terms of realism, i.e., no realism at all, narrow line of sight, infantries taking 100 bullets to die, etc.

AFAIK there is only one game which covers realism called Graviteam Tactics, but unfortunately that game is very archaic in almost every aspect, it would have been awesome if SS4 had a more realistic approach because as I said above, we already have those other WWII RTS games that has saturated the niche market.

Why is SS4 not realistic?

IMO realism in gameplay destroyes any game. Realism is restricted to graphics and dynamics. In game play (logics) realism has no balance nor fairness, whereas a game needs balance and fairness. For example, realistic gameplay destroys FIFA, but realistic graphics and moves makes the game great. A game is a game, not the real thing. SS4 includes balance and fairness with different docterines. If you seek realisme, go and play soccer (not war).

Well the scale is off...in real life soldiers tend to engage each other at 200 to 300 meters instead if this game’s solid 200 feet. It’s like they are using Nerf guns instead of modern weaponry at that distance. This is of course a necessary abstraction. Graviteam tactics is more a simulator than a true RTS.

Snipers, riflemen, machinegunners have different ranges. Perhaps some tweaking is necesary. The game developer are listing to us. The game is in development.

I wasn’t saying that as a criticism of the game...realistic ranges are just far longer than can be rendered well in this style of game.

If you ever played ArmA 3’s excellent WW2 conversions you’d see what I mean. The ranges are simply to long to render “realistically”.

I for one like the way SS4 and Blitzkrieg 3 and COH series play. They render the time period well artistically and preserve the relative strengths of the units well.
