Some info i can give on crafting/blacksmith.
1) The higher your blacksmith/crafting level, the better items you can make. This works with your actual character level also. To make the best items of course you want crafting and blacksmith at level 5, and your character level i think at least level 14. At this level you also have a chance for additional abilities on items that you make.
2) You'll find recipes in the various books you discover while looting areas and reading them. You can also find a recipe online and simply making it will reveal the recipe for later.
3) Don't use any ore or metal ingot bars to make weapons, armor until your crafting and blacksmith are level 5 and your level 14+, to get better items that you can use or sell. Don't sell any cheap basic weapons but instead if you can use the forge to melt them into ingot bars which you can save and craft more profitable items at higher levels. Armor you can just sell.
4) Early hints.
a) Buy pumpkins from the vegetable vendor or find them and make early game good helmets. combine the pumpkin with a knife to make pumpkin helmets
b) Buy any fish you can from the vendors, you can combine them with a forge to make suppers, which you can use or sell at a profit
So read up on the various guides, get a feel. Again crafting is complex and takes a bit of learning but isn't necessary really much and isn't super powerful until again you get your max crafting/blacksmith to 5 and higher levels. But you can simply save your game and start experimenting with recipes to see what you can make and just reload after. When i play i don't really use crafting or blacksmith much again until i'm at least level 14 and have my blacksmith and crafting to 5.
I do use a wiki to check the recipes, but I will warn you some recipes I believe are not up to date over there, so spam save before every craft just incase lol.
My favourite early rush to make is the belts/amulets, these stay useful a long time I think, and the stat bonuses are just really impact-full for your abilities.
-------
Skull/Feather/Claw + Pixie dust (from merchants when you hit like level 3)--->
Magic Skull/Feather/Claw + Rope = Belts.
Magic Feather/Claw + Thread = Amulets.
Gives
+1 int belt (Skull)
+1 dex belt and amulet (Feather)
+1 Str belt and amulet (Claw)
Other some specific low priority just incase ones I like but I'll probably not really need.
+1 Loremaster amulet: Magic Tusk + Thread. (Magic Large Tusk gives +1 int +1 Lore).
+1 Charisma amulet/belt: Magic Tooth + Thread or Rope.
+1 Leadership helmet: Magic Starfish + Leather Cap
(You'll probably find a helmet with that early though).

I don't use potions as much as I should probably lol, can't ever remember.
(I do consider making air resistance potions for arrows I'll mention later Jellyroom+Empty Potion Bottle).
Foods are much cheaper to invest in utilising than potions for healing, especially if you have the enhance food effects passive trait.
I like Rivellon Fries the most (Large heal and +Constitution) for healing emergencies and just leave the potions alone, I give those to the "tank" the most.
Potato+any dagger/knife--->Cold Fries + "Oven/Furnace/Mobile Kitchen".
Otherwise, I don't really use foods to give stats as I should, can't ever remember lol.
I turn all meats to dinners to not clutter inventory mainly lol.
---------
Blacksmithing, as Eol Sunder mentioned, don't make any items till much later, you'll make so much gold and stuff later levels, the only thing I consider while levelling is using whetstone wheel and sharpen daggers/swords/axe etc.
Boosting armors is actually a crafting skill, I like the Metal Armor+Anvil to grant boost movement. Metal Shield + anvil is a slight meh boost but if you're already there lol.
Element essence+Armor boost resistance, this is usefull if you want to stack a resistance and start being stupid with your aoe magic spells, set everything on fire and not care lol.
Nine Inch Nails+ Any Footwear Immune to slipping.
I think this is really good, if you plan on using ice fields yourself.
There are a lot of other boosts, but they are meh +Def to me /shrug wiki them lol.
----------
Arrows!!! Now those I definitely love, and I think it's worth actively stocking up materials from merchants every time you see them, cause it's much much cheaper making them, and the effects are imo worth.
So you make *Type Arrowhead* then combine with Arrow Shafts (buy from vendors every time you see them very cheap).
The ones I think are easy/worth to my taste.
Tooth + Any Knife--> Stunning
Antler + Any Knife-->Knockdown
Rotten Eggs/Intestines +Arrowhead-->Poison
These are not "as easy", but kinda worth imo.
Air Resistance Potion (Jellyroom+Empty Potion Bottle) + Arrowhead-->Static Cloud
(this is a friendly fire aoe stun zone, can come in clutch sometimes lol).
Drudanae+ Arrowhead--> Charm, meh but fun.
There's a lot more stuff on the wiki of course, but these are like the ones that are "burned in my memory", cause they are I think impact-full lol.
