I expect the alternate solution is that you get from Maradino since I found a second note from him at another location.
I agree. I'm amazed that play testers didn't pick this up.
Normally I like to puzzle this sort of thing out, but when I encounter nonsense like this it makes me more likely to go directly to a walkthrough which ends up spoiling the game for me.
Answering the riddle, using the spell, and then killing the damn shrooms anyways= most XP possible for that quest.
