I killed it by luring it into the lava trap on the middle of the stairs. The lava activates as soon as someone steps off one of the pressure plates, so I parked all of my characters past the trap and kept one (invisible) character on top of the pressure plate until I'd lured the guardian on top of the pit after which I stepped off the traps, resulting in the boss instantly dying to lava damage.
Later on I realised that the wand had been with me the entire time, it was just automatically put into the bloodstone box that some guy in Silverglen gives you so you safely can carry Tenebrium materials. :v
If you can't find the wand and you've started the The Troll's Bounty mission, you might want to check the container he gave you.
I once make a half circle of 14 barrels of poison and oil. Then I lured him into the middle and set it off. The explosion took out about 80% of his life on Tactical difficulty.
How much info is shown depends on the level in Loremaster of the character doing the inspection.
It has nothing to do with a monster being a 'boss'.
