Any purpose to the conversations between main characters?
I mean specifically the ones that give 4 different options, and do not actually award any Traits. They happen at various points in the game, such as when you've been stealing or made a large number of one particular trait's decisions. There are 4 different gradiants of a certain Trait pair that each main character can choose from. The conversation happens but has no discernable effect on the game.

Those conversations do give charater traits.
Those give minnor buff's.
It become more interesting during coop mode when players have disagreements.

If you go to your charater inventor there shoud be 4 buttions above your charaters armor.
Going:
Armor>skills>ability>conversation rewards(not accauly names)

In conversation rewards you shoud see what your conversations offer.

Those dialogues influence the relationship between the main characters, which influences a (minor) part of the end of the game.

Character responses to a situation define the character's personality. In addition, and more importantly, how those characters respond to a situation adds or take away small bonuses to different attributes, such as crafting, or lucky charm, or will power.

Here is a Wikipedia page for it that explains this system (and it also has a handy chart):
