Goblin Village Totem (SPOILERS)
I don't know if anyone has posted this or not but I have found a way to destroy the totem while not making the entire village attack you.

1. Turn off a fire that is nearby the totem
2. Cast midnight oil from the fire to the totem
3. Have someone restart the fire
4. That will ignite the midnight oil all the way to the totem and burn it down
5. No one will become hostile because "turning on fire" isn't coded in as "hostile towards totem"
6. Pick up bloodstone and continue to use the village to trade with

Interesting. Been through the game many times and I've never considered doing anything other than killing them all :)

Didn't even realize you could talk to them or that they were non-hostile.

I did the RPS but then left the village and thought I would come back later to destroy the totem. Now they are all hostile to me.

So I'm running around near the village and I find a hidden door. I go in and kill the goblin underground that is talking through the totem. Then there are 3 options to talk to the goblins through the pipe. One of them is to let the Source Hunters roam freely. I go back up and they are still hostile.

I was following your guide Ssenkrad on opening up the towns but I guess the totem has to be destroyed right away.

Anyone know of a way to make them passive again so I can barter with them?

If you are originally allowed entrance into the village by winning RPS, use the hatch, and then choose the appropriate dialogue option via the totem loudspeaker device, you will be able to trade with the goblins. Moreover, they will stop their obnoxious religious observances!

I doubt that they can be pacified after becoming hostile.

This will only work IF you haven't left the town. When you win your RPS they tell you "to talk to the totem before doing anything else", at which point you need to either

A) Talk to the totem and answer its questions correctly

and/or

B) Go in secret hatch and tell village through totem to accept you (done by killing elder and doing it yourself or by making deal with elder or by making deal then killing elder then doing it yourself)

option

C) Kill totem using midnight oil and firepit (my strat talked about in OP)

can also be done before or after A AND B, but if you ignore the totem entirely and leave

Very late to the thread but I just wanted to add that you can also summon a fire elemental right next to the totem and wait. When it dies, it leaves behind a fire aoe which will burn down the totem, but the goblins won't become aggressive.

Basically the same as using midnight oil, but an alternate spell if you have one and not the other and can't be bothered to get oil.
