How to complete A General's Story and A General's Tale?
I've heard reports that these auto-complete towards the end of the main story, but I've also seen this not happen so I'm looking for a little clarity. Is there anything I can do to advance these quests? Each have a single note regarding letters I picked up to start the quest.

There are more of those notes in the rooms that you open up in the homestead (one each) and you can read those. Otherwise, no.
