Any other usage is pretty much pointless, so if those two don't sound good just sell them away.
Ok not really using anyone with a shield right now, can anyone use a shield if they invest points? Some of my mages with wands could probably use the extra defense.
Shields on mages are useful early game. Late game, they become useless as you grown more expertise in CC and keeping enemies away. Investing in shields just for resistance/block on non-tank role is not worth it. You're better off trading in (homestead demon NPC) those ability points into attribute points for CON instead for defense.
For the mean time, a lv1 shield is good enough until you find something else to occupy their hands.
Shadow Ess can also add sneaking to 1-2 armor type, if you're the sneaking kind of player. Otherwise... invisibility and potions.
