The thing that works is a blood stone. Similar to what healed one of the two wounded guys that you chose upon meeting Evelynn in Thelyron's house (the physician of Cyseal).
It's true that it's weird in a world with the Regeneration Spell, holy grenades and whatnot. Alfie should have a special debuff to stress out the fact that it's special healing that is required.
These games annoy me in some ways where you can't...move anything. You can't even read a book without being set upon by guards. B&E and Theft are practically required in these games anymore; especially when you're trying to collect evidence against someone. It's not enough I have permission of the local militia to investigate because if you break into someone's house to take a look around for clues, they're ready to run you through and leave your bloody meat on the ground for the ants.
Alternatively you can turn invisible and loot the entire town with no one the wiser, so why even bother with a theft mechanic in the first place. I think this is why games like Final Fantasy don't bother with a theft mechanic. You're hands and feet over even the most profound of non-combatant NPC's at Level ONE and more often than not most people already know who you are and what you plan to do and it's usually stop some world-ending machination from taking place; so, yeah, by all means, if my dirty drawers help you with that; they're yours.
But no. Even cooperating with the police as a medieval-fatasy variety of the FBI, you touch that book or even BROWSE - you're not going to jail - half the town is just going to show up and kill you on the spot. Oi.
An oversight when a new type of healing was introduced in the EE. Not the only oversight ;-)
It's not that they don't know their own game, it's that EE was hurried because D:OS2 was already in heavy development. In some places it looks like one poor single guy had to do all development because everybody else was busy with the next hype already.
... and there were even harder deadlines than usual because Sony and M$ were also involved (the console ports) ...
