Orcs
Well, I have gone as far as I can in all directions; I have run out of places to gain experience. Every other place I go has enemies level 8+, who kick my posterior. I pretty much HAVE to go through the orcs and head for the Cove.

Unfortunately, nothing I try works. The orcs always get the initiative; if we could ever move first it might help. The orc leader, Grab-bag or Grugnir or whatever ... who can pronounce orc names?? ... tries to scare us, which isn't too hard to resist, but he then follows up wih setting two of the four of us on fire, leaving them blazing and half dead before any of my peeps can even move.

If I try to heal them, I use up two of my four character moves. If I don't, they're dead next turn when the orc shamans attack. I tried using an Avatar of Fire scroll on Madora. Supposedly she should be immune to burning with that in effect. Whoever made that scroll is a charlatan; she goes on fire really nicely. Mmm, toasty!

Someone suggested using Charm on the big boy. I gave Madora my one and only arrow of charming, and ran her up to within 2 feet of the beggar; she couldn't miss. I have hit him with that damned arrow 5 times now, and he has resisted the charm every time.

I have run this scenario 11 times, and it always ends the same way; everyone is dead by the end of round 3, and the orcs are barely scratched. Any suggestions?

Oh, and the way the orcs are positioned, all the others are out of range of any of my attacks on my first round of responding, so I can't even try to slow down the Shamans.

Highly depends on playstyle, equipement and party composition (ideally, provide a vid with example). Generally, easiest way would be to place couple of barrels, retreat and blow those up at a right moment (won't solve your issue with losing fights, ofc).

FYI: special arrows don't miss. Ever. They can hit ocasonal obstacle and that's it.

Good to know about the arrows never missing; I had no clue. I will use them from further away, in that case. A lot of the problems I am having with certain combats is due to the fact that I have no knowledge of such mechanics. Is there a basic combat guide available somewhere?

And how come he resists the charm every time? He's supposed to have low willpower or whatever the stat is controlling that. And why doesn't avatar of fire scroll help with being set on fire? Would a fire resistance scroll be better?

Hah! Found some guides.

Looks like I may have made a few training errors; hopefully they won't gimp me too much later on.

OK, the guides to basic combat mechanics were quite helpful. I now have at least some idea of different tactics and what spells and skills give an edge. Gar-bage, the orc leader and his boys are now history.

Leading me to yet another question. This guy would probably qualify as a low level Boss type. Are these immune to charm? 7 tries to turn him with my charm arrow failed. One shot with it turned one of his shamans to my side with no problem.

As far as I can tell after several playthroughs the bosses are immune to charm so bestto hit their minions with it. You did the right thing to check their stats and resistances since it will tell you which one is most likely to succumb to charm.

Get Leadership on your caster (so all the other non casters in the party benefit from the melee and initiative buffs) then put all your +initiative gear on that character. Enjoy being the first in turn (most of the time) for the rest of the game.

I honestly dont know. Check the combat log. Its possible that he just has very high bodybuilding/willpower which makes it very unlikely for it to succeed. The log will tell you.
