Blank scrolls and skillbooks
I have been carrying around some blank scrolls and skill books of various types for some time. I found some feathers and made them into quills. I also found a quill and inkpot set. I ground up half a dozen bags of pixie dust.

Now what?

I'm going to take a guess and speculate that I can probably only write down skills and spells that one of my people already knows, but how exactly do I go about doing his?

Combine quill and ink pot with pixie dust to create Magic Quill and Inkpot.

Then combine that with a blank scroll and it will create a random spell for that type of scroll.

You can combine 2 blank scrolls of the same type to create a blank skill book of that type.

You can combine a blank skill book with a spell scroll (of the same type, pyro or hydro etc..) to create a skillbook for that skill that was on the scroll.

Depending on your level in Crafting, you can write ANY spell of the underlying ability school, independent of anything else.
Some spells cannot be crafted because the scrolls for the spells do not exist in the unmodded game:
- Geomancer: Summon Poison Slug
- Witchcraft: Decaying Touch
- Hydrosophist: Mass Healing
- Aerotheurge: Netherswap
No scrolls for there spells exist, so they cannot be crafted. There are some Marksman scrolls but they can only be found or bought because there are no empty marksman scrolls. Man-at-Arms and Scoundrel scrolls don't exist at all in an unmodded game.

The output scroll you get is completely random. With Crafting 5 you have a random chance to create any Air, Water, Fire, Earth or Witchcraft scroll, if you know the spell or not.
And of course you can only create an air scroll from an empty air scroll etc.

For scroll writing, you need the Magic Inkpot & Quill, i.e. the version made with pixie dust.

Thanks for the info. I was afraid I'd have to go out and make ink somehow as well.

You have to make it in your imagination ... for roleplaying purposes ;-)

Another question. How much crafting does it take to be able to make an adept skill book? With 3 levels of crafting, Roderick can make any novice level skillbook, but can't seem to do adept. I'm guessing that he would need 4 ranks to do adept books, and 5 for Master level skills?

That's a huge investment in skill points. He'd need to toss 9 more into crafting to hit level 5. I guess I could look around for gear that gives a crafting bonus.

You don't have to spend much at all to max out crafting.

+1 on 2 different pieces of gear for +2
+1 from Scientist Talent
+1 from Pragmatic Trait

That's +4 with no skill point investment. You only need to invest 1 total to reach 5.

Similarly you only need to invest 3 points for rank 2 Blacksmith and the other 3 ranks come from Scientist and 2 pieces of gear.

Just swap the +1 gear on when you craft and take it off and use something better when adventuring.

Belts and bracers can come with blacksmithing and crafting bonus, as Qiox said, you don't need to invest more than 4 points, 1 for crafting and 3 for blacksmithing to max out both.

If you want to know exactly which spellbooks have which crafting requirement, just download one of the crafting mods from nexus, they usually contain all existing crafting recipes as well. All you need to do then is to figure out which internal name corresponds to which spell ;-)

Yeah, I realized that the gear could be switched around about 10 minutes after I wrote that. I still don't have enough of the appropriate gear to get to 4 ranks of either blacksmth or crafting, though, but I'll keep looking for it.

You should take the Scentist talent on your crafter. I always keep one crafter in the party because I'm usually too lazy to switch characters in homestead for crafting.

Jahan already comes with the Scientist talent.
