It must be some kind of bug where an ingame init script did not trigger.
The books are added to the Teller at game initialization ... if nothing goes wrong.
If she does not have them, an error must have occurred.
The reason why the books are added by script and not through the Treasure Tables is to keep them unique. (If they were added by the Treasure Tables, there would be an 'infinite supply' of them.)
(I think there was a bug when the EE came out that prevented the Teller to have the books but it was supposedly fixed in a patch.)
You have three choices now:
- contact Larian's support
- continue and go without the books
- start a new playthrough (and hope that the bug does not trigger again)
I'm definitely not starting over. I guess I'll just have to do without. Or maybe I'll consider using CheatEngine to tweak the stats and subtract the gold. Anybody remember how much they cost (at say 35 attitude and 6 barter, thanks to mule) and what exactly they confer?
I bet this all happened because for the longest time the Homestead didn't advance because I didn't notice the Teller of Secrets sitting in the Hall of Heroes.
Total 13-15k with standard attitude and 3-4 barter from memory. You can always just check the actual price and quit the game straight after though.
There are more of these books in the game, not sold by the Teller.
There are two additional Mortal Techniques and one additional Body Mastery I know of.
As far as I remember, they are spawned via the Treasure Tables so the same bug should not occur for them.
