I am a purist as well and I would recommend pure Tank and hybrid Healer+Enchanter (Witch or Cleric, I'd say) as starting classes. Everything else you will pretty much get on your way through the game.
I was thinkin a cleric as well.
I like starting with a witch, the geomancer summon spider is extremely handy early game.
IMO there is no such thing as best "starting" or "beginner" class. Any class can be good or bad, depending on how you build it. There is no one class that is "better" than the others. It's not like some classes are OP and others suck.
So it's best just to pick whatever you most want to play as, and then learn as you go along.
-earth fire mage
-scoundrel/Archer
And after that, pick Jahan the water air mage and Madora or Baidotr
If you plan to take take lone wolf talent:
One mage with every school of magic
One Archer/scoundrel
And as always, personalize one of your characters to have the skill "walk in the shadows" (invisibility) from start.
To resolve puzzles, wingfeet skill is also needed or useful
