Also Rot is cured whenever you get zapped by a Star Stone.
Eventually you might have to, depends. Some tenebrium weapons have higher requirements and you need I think 3 points to add Tenebrium to weapons.
The only reason to bring tenebrium up to 3 is to be able to craft the tenebrium damage onto regular weapons. That's really the only reason. With some luck, you can find a ring with +1 tenebrium, then you get +1 from the quest or book which means you finally only need to invest one single point to get to 3, if you're unlucky, you need 3 points, and only on one single player, your crafter.
The tenebrium boost crafted on weapons is a lot higher than the built-in one on tenebrium weapons and can only be crafted on non-tenebrium weapons. Tenebrium weapons cannot be improved in crafting at all, can not even be put on the whetstone wheel.
As said, choose one character to get tenebrium for crafting, otherwise it's useless.
(You might not even want to put shadow damage on weapons but fire or air damage, then you don't need the ability at all beyond the automatically granted point from quest or book.)
If you want to use tenebrium weapons for whatever reason, the highest possible requirement is Tenebrium 4, for two-handed hammers, everything else does not go above 3 as a requirement.
(Hope I remember this correctly.)
There are also Shadow Wands which don't give you the Rot because they were simply forgotten in the development process. Those can be bought from the trader in the homestead and maybe from the tenebrium trader in Hunter's Edge. I believe they also require the tenebrium ability though.
