"connection failed: server has wrong version"
When I try to play with my friend, we keep getting this error no matter who creates the server. I tried to re-install the game, changing the path and some other stuff but none of them worked. And there is not much info about this error.
My version number is v2.0.199.430 however my friend's version number is not visible in the main menu. So I suspect the versions are different from each other.
Anyone can help with this issue? Thanks in advance.

Try verifying local files: in the Steam library, right click on Divinity Original Sin 2 and select Properties, switch to the Local Files tab and then click on the 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache...' button.

Is the version number just listed as 'v' for your friend? A handful of people have reported this problem in D:OS EE and the original release of D:OS 2. Reinstalling the game should fix it, preferably to a different location or drive, if available. One person who had both the Steam and GOG versions (from their Kickstarter rewards) simply switched to using the other version.

For Steam, there is a way to effectively reinstall the game without having to redownload it. Hopefully that will be sufficient to fix this problem.
Right click on the game in the library and select 'Backup Game Files...'. When that is done, right click again and 'Delete Local Content...', then in Windows Explorer, make sure the install folder has either been removed or is empty (before deleting, right click, select Properties, switch to the Local Files tab and select 'Browse Local Files...'), then restore the game backup.

Thank you so much. It turns out my friend also needed to change the location. Now she can see the version number and I managed to join her game. :D

Thank you for the details; I'll suggest changing the localization first, if any one else reports this.

Guys all the other solutions didn't work for me - make sure you're both using the definitive edition, that worked for me.
