If you like isometric style crpgs, then DOS2 is a must-have. The Origin Characters are all interesting and have stories integrated alongside the main plot, so playing as any of them gives you a personalized secondary story. It's one of those few games where playing the pre-gen characters is a good idea (though you can still change their class and skills).
The story is interesting enough, the exploration is excellent, the combat is solid. It feels very much like a D&D adventure to me (a 30 rpg veteran) and captures much of what I want in a game like this.
Playing through DOS 1 would not help you understand the lore of DOS 2, and neither would looking up lore/info cinematics for DOS 1.
DOS 1's story/lore is irrelevant to DOS 2's.
The reason why you are confused is because contrary to popular belief, DOS 2 is simply written badly.
And there's no way to solve that problem at this point, since that would be a problem that the writers would have to fix by re-writing the game (which isn't going to happen).
I agree with v0 in this case that given your situation, the DOS games maybe are not the best ones for you. They tend to be very difficult to play through.
And they have tons of dialogues, not all of which are voiced (even though everyone always says they are fully voiced, which isn't actually true). For example, when you are given a choice of several dialogue options, your character doesn't actually speak out those lines using their voice. So, you are therefore forced to read all of those lines.
Source and Magic are two different things. Magic is the conjurings of man, Source is like the fabric of reality bent to serve your will. The use of Source weakens reality and allows demons to slip through, which are the servants of chaos and desire to unmake all of creation as you know it. The use of Source, because of its inherent danger and ability to manifest in people otherwise untrained in magic, is highly illegal.
Few beings can use Source and its users have been hunted for centuries, making for even fewer people who can use it now. Those who can are being rounded up for the 'safety of everyone' and experimented upon in order to make them less dangerous.
You and your companions were all found to be, or are suspected of being, Source users and are therefore transferred to this island rather than being executed where you were captured. Of the possible fates, yours could be worse.
