Is there a great benefit to keeping the goblins alive? Trading purposes?

Nope. Kill them. But before you do, kill the shaman in the cave.

Yeah, I did that - does he (and by he, I mean his loot) disappear after you kill the goblins?

No, the shaman will not disappear, he will only become hostile. The intent to kill the shaman first is only for the purpose of using the totem command.

I think some really older guides recommended keeping them alive as long as possible as the vendor with the highest chance of source of tormented souls (basically the best bonus a crafting charather can combine with a weapon)

Personally I think looking for TS is overkill... the relative difficulty of the last part of the game is a lot lower than midgame given how crazy your charahters start scaling.

So yeah, just kill them.
