Best order to play Divinity games?
Hi,

I've dabbled previously a bit with Divinity: Original Sin but never finished it. Recently however, I found information that rather than being a sequel to older games, Original Sin would actually be a prequel to the first game. So is it recommended to first finish Original Sin rather than the older games if I want to try and not be spoiled? I know, the older games are like....dusty tomes in comparison to Original Sin but if I'd want to finish them, which would be the best order to do so?

D:OS is set 1200 years before the other Divinity games. The story of D:OS leads into the pre-story of Divine Divinity, but there aren't a lot of direct connections.
Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity and Divinity 2: Developer's Cut should be played in order, but in terms of the story it doesn't matter if you finish D:OS first or the other Divinity games.
Lots of people started with Divinity 2 after it was released, actually, if the earlier 2 are too 'dusty' for you. It could be played out of order, though does contain a summary of the events of Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity (though primarily the events between the 2 games, described in the Beyond Divinity prequel novella).

Thank you for the info. :) I will definitely play them all eventually. Or at least give them a shot. What about Dragon Commander? Which part of the timeline does that story fit into? I know it's quite different game (probably understatement of the year here) but when do its events happen?

Dragon Commander is set 10k years before the other games. There is no story connection.

I see, good to know. Thank you for the answers.

Up to now, the connection I found between D:OS and the other games are Zandalor, zixzax and the teleport pyramids. Divinity 2 mentions a lot the character you played in the first game.

For any new (and young) person interested in the divinity games, my recomendations would be to play it backwards, D:Original Sin (for the graphics, the coop and the tactics), divinity 2 (more action you can dodge attacks, the world is in 3D and dragon flying), Beyond divinity (old school but you control 2 characters) and the last divine divinity which is very old school.

Except Bellegar mentioning Maxos helping the Dragon Commander, in Divinity OS.

You meet Bellegar.
You can find a Sword that is originally from Divinity 2
Maxos is mentioned by Bellegar
Arhu & ZixZax talk about Damian The Damned One
And there's some books in OS timeline that shouldn't exist for thousands of years.

Thats backwards in release order, but in terms of Timeline that like watching Wolverine Origins, then Last Stand, then Xmen United.

If you want to play in order of release:
Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity, Divinity 2 (Avoid Ego Draconis version), Dragon Commander, Divinity OS, and then Divinity OS2.

If you want to play in order according to timeline:
Dragon Commander, Divinity OS 1 & 2, Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity, and Divinity 2.
(Be like watching Star Wars Ep 1 first before watching all the others)

Thank you for clear listings. ^_^ I really enjoy the atmosphere of Divinity games but I am also a fan of continuity so knowing which order to play the games in order to better understand the grand timeline is useful.

My recomendation was effectively backwards in release date, because not everybody likes old school games or retro-gaming, and divine divinity and beyond divinity have aged.
It would be sad that someone begins with divine divinity, finds it too old school or dificult and give up on playing the other games. ( This does not applies to me, I like isometric rpg games, but it is not for everybody)
