It's possible to get different speeches from ZixZax at the end, but what actions, exactly, determine what he says (or does not say) to you are very unclear. He called my Source Hunters arch-nemeses or something like that, even though they never disagreed in any conversation except once. So his speech to me made no sense.
I've asked for clarification on this board before in regards to what actions, specifically, determine what ZixZax says to you at the end, but no one told me any answer (maybe no one knows).
And it also made no sense that he was speaking to other Imps even though I had those Imps removed from my Homestead long before that point.
And IMO it also makes no sense that the Source Hunters go back to derp around in the SH Academy, even though ZixZax promised they could never return to Rivellon; and moreover, the whole entire story presents the idea that the characters have much grander and more important destinies than just to be run of the mill Source Hunters.
Plus, there's no closure/resolution/any reasonable attempt to address the Zandalor/Icara issue.
So yeah, DOS has one of the crappiest endings I've ever seen in a game.
There is a secret ending, but it's also very short. That is accessed by you letting Astarte or your party die during the fight vs. the Void Dragon.
I completely agree. This was one of the most immersive games I've played in a long time. For the first 60-70 hours of gameplay, I had a hard time tearing myself away to play anything else. Being able to interact with so much of the environment; being able to tackle quests in many different ways; going off the beaten path to find little secrets; all was very enjoyable.
Which is why the ending was such a let down. But, I can't wait to pick up the sequel during the next Steam sale, so Larian studios did far more right, than they did wrong. Just hoping that DOS2 has a better ending than the first game!
